Arts, Crafts, Photography & Design 2008 - 2015
Portfolio for applications to Architecture BA programmes, compiled in May 2015.
“INCREDIBLE INDIA.” Photographs, December 2008, Various Locations, India. “An Uttarkhandi groom on his wedding day. A Rajasthani artist and his miniature painting. Two young visitors travellers.”
“EMBERCOMBE.” Photographs, February 2014, Exeter, UK. “I visited Embercombe to explore a way of life that I had believed to be more honest to the human condition. It was indeed an enlightening experience, although I did not come away thinking a move to the countryside was necessary for an authentic way of life.”
“OZ.” Photographs, March 2015, Los Angeles, CA, USA. “Oz didn’t exactly come prepared for the photo shoot. He preferred to improvise his styling.”
LIFE MODELS. Drawings in pencil, April 2015, London, UK. “Various life drawings completed during the Royal Drawing School’s ‘Drawing Week.’”
“CLAIRE.” Drawing in charcoal; Oil on canvas, April 2015, London, UK. “A painting and charcoal study completed during the Royal Drawing School’s ‘Life Painting Week,’ my first experience with human subjects.”
“THE SERVANT.” Drawing in pencil, April 2015, London, UK. “On our day trip to the National Gallery during the Royal Drawing School’s ‘Drawing Week’ course, I came upon ‘Christ Washing the Feet of the Disciples’ and chose to use it for a study drawing. Much as Tintoretto had in the original, I put the Christ figure at the centre of my priorities.”
“VENUS.” Sculpture in clay, March 2015, Cottage Grove, OR, USA. “I asked my host at the Aprovecho natural building school for some clay to experiment with and he directed me to an open pit in the woods. I didn’t have a particular agenda so I just grabbed a handful and started fiddling with it until a slightly more coherent lump emerged. I gave it legs, a spout and a function. Regrettably, I did not give it a proper kiln to dry inside, setting it above the wood stove to the unfortunate (yet unintentionally aesthetic) result above.”
LAMP. Prototype in wood, April 2015, Cottage Grove, OR, USA. “My intention had been to create a lamp with two settings: ambient room lighting and focussed desk lighting. Metal screens block the ambient light openings as the ‘head’ tilts backward to reveal a gap for the direct light mode. Unfortunately, the materials I used in the prototype proved too clunky to create a clear distinction between the modes and, even if built to spec, the lamp would prove overly inefficient in light transmission. It is included here as merely an experiment.”
OUTDOOR SHOWER COMPLEX. 1:10 scale model in wood, clay and aluminium, March 2015, Cottage Grove, OR, USA. “Designed for the Aprovecho natural building school to be affordable and simple to assemble. I positioned wooden posts haphazardly while adjusting the size and angle of aluminium panels to maximise the sense of openness while providing for the bare minimum of privacy. Bamboo troughs direct grey water onto bamboo saplings sprouting directly under each panel, essentially growing their replacements.”
CHURCH RUIN. Drawing in pencil & pen, April 2015, London, UK. “The scene offered a good observation exercise, with elements spanning multiple eras and states of repair.”
“AVIACHALET.” Sketchup model, May 2014, Méolans-Revel, France. “The brief was to design a tree-house to function as a holiday chalet. For my first attempt at architectural design, I came up with the most logical solution I could think of: I simply let the shape of the platform (dictated by the trees onto which it was suspended) inform the plan while pushing and pulling on corners of the roof to create head space where needed, economise on material where not and ensure a minimum roof pitch throughout.”
@skinidip. Photographs, 2014-2015, Various locations, Worldwide. “A collection of my Instagram snapshots spanning two years of travel.” (Note: All work here is original, shot and edited in phone on location.)
